What To Do If You Have Mold

moldMold is a microscopic organism or fungi with over 100,000 or more different types. Not all molds are harmful and only certain types will send out dangerous spores called mycotoxins and these are what cause severe health problems. Black mold or toxic mold is rare but is the most harmful to adults and children as it attacks the immune system along with other parts of the body. This can lead to serious physical and neurological problems if not treated including memory loss, anxiety, change in personality, shortness of breath, headaches, sore throats, brain damage and numerous other problems and in some cases even death.

Mold is usually put into three different categories with the first being Allergic molds, which contain allergens, Pathogenic molds which cause severe health problems and lastly Toxic molds which are the most harmful.

Mold grows best at room temperature and thrives in wet, damp, humid areas usually associated with a musty smell. In and around your home it can be found by trees, gardens, on paint, plaster, wood, tile and grout, food, gutters, and indoor or outdoor sewers with poor drainage. Damp basements are usually the leading cause of mold and the spores can infiltrate into other areas including the kitchen, bathroom, and attics.

If you suspect mold is present in your home mold remediation is needed as soon as possible. Mold inspectors should be bonded and have a thorough knowledge of air conditioning and heat ventilation (HVAC), and provide you with a guarantee or warranty. The ones to consider would be a Certified Indoor Hygienist, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Mold Inspector, Certified Mold Contractor or a Certfified Mold Remediator. The inspector will decide what course of action is needed which might include an air sample, tape lift, swab samples and a carpet check with samples being sent off to a lab. When the results come back the cost can be anywhere from $500.00 to over $30,000.00.

Remediation includes the killing of the mold and its removal although it is nearly impossible to completely remove it all. The company might use an air scrubber, industrial strength biocides, and moisture meters. All workers wear masks, respirators, protective clothing including gloves as the mold will send out spores into the air.

Remember to always keep track of the humidity in your home, check for water stains and repair all leaky faucets, pipes and gutters.
